Being a female small business owner in 2022 means several things for most of us, like that we’re ambitious, tough, and probably at least a little sleep-deprived. But one of the most crucial things it means to be a female small business owner in 2022 is that you are not alone.
They say it’s lonely at the top, and it’s easy to feel that way if you’re working seven days a week because your business can hardly function an hour without you, but consider that female entrepreneurship statistics for 2021 show that:
- Women own 31% of small businesses or franchises in the US, and 14% of women-owned businesses employ between 11 and 50+ workers. (Guidant Financial)
- Women-owned businesses statistics show that 17% of black women are in the process of starting or running new businesses. (HBR, CNBC)
- The female entrepreneurial activity rate in the US is 16.6% of the total female working-age population. (Mastercard)
The most recent statistics show that there are over 250 million women entrepreneurs in the world, with 153 million women operating well-established businesses. You are far from alone.
I Became The Support I Needed
In 2017, my association management firm had to shut down after 10 years of profitable business because it was too dependent on me to survive on its own. As many others do, I had believed that my business would be around forever, with or without me. But the enterprise I worked for a decade to build into a profitable and growing concern turned out to be unsustainable without my constant attention.
I had built a successful and thriving business, but because I did not build a succession plan or exit strategy, I was unable to sell my business. It would have helped immensely to have someone knowledgeable and objective look at my business and help me develop strategies and an action plan, as well as supporting me and pointing me in the right direction.
A Female Small Business Owner Community
Part of what I needed years ago would have been a community support group, a mastermind type of team of fellow female CEOs, or business coaching. It would have been a lifeline to sell the business instead of closing it when life took a left turn. I am now on a mission to make those resources for collaborative business relationships easily accessible.
Women are wired to grow strong in community. I am passionate about that and am part of a movement to pay it forward by helping other female leaders see potential blind spots and sidestep potential pitfalls. Together we are better!
